2010 Google SOC, Sqlite/Spatialite
Luca Bianconi is going to implement the Sqlite / Spatialite plugin for gvSIG 2.0. His mentor will be Benjamin Ducke ( Oxford Archaeology ). I recommended him this pure-Java version of the Sqlite driver. It'll be interesting to see how this project and gvSIG 2.0 evolve.
